Improving usage statistics for RepositóriUM

In this paper is presented the main improvements that were developed and introduced to the usage statistics Add-on developed at Minho University, for the institutional repository RepositóriUM, which was presented in the last DSpace User Group meeting in Bergen.

The system is composed by 3 main components: Log Processor, Data Model, Web Interface. The first one is responsible for the gathering, real time processing and storing of event logs generated by DSpace. The second component is the data model stored in a data base management system (DBMS), where the relevant, and properly processed, information is archived. The Web interface is flexible, allowing to configure - according with a base structure -the display of the information in the user interface.

The Add-on was developed to respond to the specific needs of RepositóriUM, where it is being used, in production stage, since January 2006. Nevertheless, as the system is completely adjustable to other environments, because their components can be easily configured, changed or extended, to respond to different information needs, it is being used in several other DSpace repositories.

According to our experience on this first eighteen months, the system has proved to be very successful, with high usage, and has contributed to recruit new content and new authors to the repository, which was one of the main objectives. Despite this success we have also identified several aspects that could and should be improved.

In the first place, as the usage of RepositóriUM and the period of the log information have been growing, the generation of real-time time statistics was showing an increasing degradation of performance/response time. In response to this problem, the system was changed to execute temporal data aggregations (month, year, global) to improve the response time of the most “heavy” statistics (for instance, downloads at General/Repository level). Those aggregations are pre-processed in batch mode.

Secondly, there was also some work on the improvement of the presentation and navigation on the Web interface. Taking into account some rigidity on the structure and presentation of the Web interface, a better and more efficient navigation between statistics was developed and implemented, making it easier to navigate between different levels of data aggregation. Graphic presentations of the data on some statistics were also introduced.

In the third place, responding to some requests and the identification of recent needs, new statistics were developed and made available in the system.

Finally, trying to respond to the expectation of the growing number of installations of the Add-on on other institutions, the system documentation was significantly improved and developed, especially the user oriented documentation, creating a User Guide, besides the Installation Guide.
